Lots of reading
I’ve just gotten in the latest issue of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society. Also John Baez has posted another installment of This Week’s Finds in Mathematical Physics.
The latter talks a bit about the program of “categorifying” knot theory, and also mentions Peter Woit’s and Lee Smolin’s books about string theory. The former has a lot of stuff about George Dantzig, along with interviews with some of the recent Fields medalists and overviews of their work. It also has a review of a book on the “use and abuse” of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, which I’ll have to get ahold of to review, since abuses of mathematics are great things to rant about.
