The Unapologetic Mathematician

Mathematics for the interested outsider

Save Mathematical Summer School

Over at Mathematics Under the Microscope, Alexandre Borovik was recently talking about his experiences teaching at a summer school for Turkish undergraduates near (what was) Ephesus. He even posted a bunch of pictures.

But right as his time there was up, the summer school was shut down by the local authorities for, among other things, “education without permission”. He followed up by noting that it isn’t some bizarre prank of his, and that the organizer of this school is really being prosecuted for the “crime” of trying to teach mathematics to eager, interested undergraduates.

He has now started a petition in the attempt to forestall this fate.
