The Unapologetic Mathematician

Mathematics for the interested outsider

Sunday Samples 90 (one day late)

Saturday I did a bunch more hiking in Mammoth Cave National Park, and I was recovering most of Sunday. While I did, I caught the mini-marathon of Breaking Bad that I’d recorded from AMC a little over a week ago. It’s really an excellent piece of work, and I’m glad I caught up so I can watch season 2 when it arrives early next year.

The basic idea is this: Bryan Cranston (the father from “Malcolm In the Middle”) plays high-school science teacher Walter White who learns he has inoperable lung cancer and decides to provide for his family after he dies by cooking crystal meth. So if you thought he had more in him than a foil for Frankie Muniz, you were right. Incidentally, the same is true of Jane Kaczmarek, but Cranston won the Emmy for dramatic actor this year for his work in Breaking Bad.

Anyhow, episode 106 — “Crazy Handful of Nothin’” — is really a high point for the series. Among other great scenes it’s got a montage where Walt’s former-student-cum-partner tries moving a pound of glass in one night. And it’s laid over a charming easy-listening track, redolent of 1960s pop.

I really can’t seem to find much about it, though. Production companies seem to have purchased it as “Scoobidoo Love”, by Paul Rothman, as that’s how it’s credited in Breaking Bad, and an episode of Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law. However, it also shows up as “It Is Such A Good Night” by the Charlie Steinmann Orchestra on the 2002 German compilation Like a Breeze, which doesn’t even seem to be available for purchase through Amazon.de! And there’s no videos on YouTube either…

So I went through some channels I have and tracked (no pun intended) it down. And now I’m putting it up for you good people, with the explicit disclaimer that if I could pay for it I would be more than happy to, but it just doesn’t seem to be commercially available. From the Charlie Steinmann Orchestra, “It Is Such A Good Night”.

It is such a good night to kiss
It is such a good night to dance
It is such a good night to
Scoobide-doobidoo
Scoobide-doobidoo
Scoobide-doobidoo
Love

It is such a good night to kiss
It is such a good night to dance
It is such a good night to
Scoobide-doobidoo
Scoobide-doobidoo
Scoobide-doobidoo
Love

It is such a good night to kiss
It is such a good night to dance
It is such a good night to
Scoobide-doobidoo
Scoobide-doobidoo
Scoobide-doobidoo
Love

It is such a good night to kiss
It is such a good night to dance
It is such a good night to
Scoobide-doobidoo
Scoobide-doobidoo
Scoobide-doobidoo
Love
