Gin Blossoms’ major-label breakthrough, New Miserable Experience came out in 1992, while I was still in middle school. There were a whole group of us who really liked the album, but I don’t think any of us realized why until much later on. It leads off with one of the few songs on the album not to be released as a single: “Lost Horizons”.
The last horizons I can see
Are filled with bars and factories
And in them all we fight to stay awakeI’d drink enough of anything
To make this world look new again
I’m drunk, drunk, drunk in the gardens and the gravesShe had nothing left to say
So she said she loved me
I stood there grateful for the lieI’d drink enough of anything
To make this girl look new again
I’m drunk, drunk, drunk in the gardens and the gravesTurn summer trees to bones and ice
Turn insect songs against the night
With words we build and words we break
I’m drunk, drunk, drunk in the gardens and the gravesMaybe I could use you
To reassure myself
I wouldn’t wish this indecision
On anybody elseI’d drink enough of anything
To make this world look new again
And when the sin smiles, how could it be wrong? The last horizons I could see
Are now resigned to memories
I never thought I’d still be here todayI’d drink enough of anything
To make myself look new again
I’m drunk, drunk, drunk in the gardens and the graves
I’ve loved that album since college, as well as the follow-up Congratulations…I’m Sorry (which is only slightly less good). Last year they played Mayfest here in Fort Worth, and they were awesome. As an encore they did a version of Elton John’s Rocket Man that started just with the lead singer (on acoustic guitar maybe?) and then built with each band member returning to the stage and adding a layer until they had the full group. I also liked some of the cuts they did from the new album (well, new as of 2006 anyway). Haven’t gotten around to getting it yet, though.
