The Unapologetic Mathematician

Mathematics for the interested outsider

I’m about to head off to the airport for my trip out to Riverside to give tomorrow’s colloquium lecture. On top of that, today’s the posted deadline for applications for UCR’s visiting positions, so the committee should be starting to make their considerations any time now. I can has proffessurship?

Anyhow, I’m going to take a couple days off, especially since I’ve done about all the integration theory I’m interested in doing for a while. When I get back, I’ll actually do something with it.

  1. Wow, good luck on the visiting position. Imagine, you and Baez at one school, I may have to reconsider where I’m at 🙂

  2. I hope that someone mentioned to you, for your visit to UC Riverside, the Eaton Collection? It’s one of the world’s best available collections of Science Fiction, and the site of an annual conference of English Literature folks who critique Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. At least I think the conference is still going; I never saw the last of my accepted papers in their Proceedings. Of course, if you are offered and accept a faculty position there, inevitably you and John Baez will be seen as “the dynamic duo” and expected to wear superhero costumes.

  3. Jonathan, I’m not sure the role of “Robin, Boy Wonder”, to the accompaniment of the presumptive role of Baez as Batman, would be much to either of their liking. Plus, those tights and briefs would become mighty uncomfortable after a while.

I might add that there is already a dynamic duo there, in the form of the team John Baez and James Dolan. It would be difficult to understate how influential Dolan has been on Baez and myself and many other people who are fortunate enough to know him.

  5. I think that if John (B) is Batman, then I’m probably Aquaman. Nobody’s really sure what he does, but the writers throw him a problem that can be solved with fish every once in a while.

As for the tights, I haven’t shaved my legs since high school madrigals, but if that’s what the job takes… also eating grubs or something. A regular Academic Fear Factor, though we’d have to get someone better than Jpe Rogan — someone who doesn’t think the moon landings were faked.

More once I’m in New Orleans and not just stuck in Charlotte for a couple hours.
